Are Building Services a necessary evil?

as part of this series of Arab talks of building engineering I’ve chosen to talk about a subject very close to me building services design and its influence on our buildings my title our building services are necessary evil provoked different responses trying to get rid of them for years was the most popular response from architects and developers but it reminded me of something an architect colleague said he said structural engineers always start with bad news but it tends to get better whereas services engineers start with good news and then it just gets worse made me think that building services engineers need to say more about building services and not less so others understand their challenges but also the potential value of good design and installation I initially rejected the title a suggestion from my structural engineer boss but on reflection it was a very insightful view because it has an underlying theme around all of design so although I focus on building services today we can also ask is design a necessary evil the last 10 years have been very successful in driving out inefficiencies in construction and the industry in the UK has been transformed but as this approach squeezed design down in order to get a fixed price and have designed as responded well to this are we now homogenizing design in a rush to get things built and reduce risk the relevance for building services is to question whether we are building for ease of construction or for better performance so my talk starts with my studies I studied building services engineering at Reading University it was a new course that was set up to acknowledge the coming-of-age of this discipline of building design and it was ambitious in what it wanted as you would expect we studied mechanical and electrical engineering the design of systems to provide heating power cooling lighting and water in building but we also studied architecture and in particular the history of architecture how buildings have historically dealt with providing light and comfort and how this was always an integral part of building we took courses in weather patterns and climate so not only understanding internal environments but the climate around buildings and cities we also studied the design of simple agricultural buildings these buildings are driven by necessity and minimal cost to build and operate they are naturally lit and ventilated to meet a very precise function lastly we studied psychology the way people behave and interact with their environment and how design can influence our behavior what makes us happy or otherwise with our buildings down to the colors we see and how we respond to controls or a lack of controls the Reading University course recognized that building services was more than just the system’s inside buildings it was about integrating architecture building physics and the science for buildings the mechanical and electrical engineering in buildings and the people so I will start with architecture building services originated from machine engineering but the business of incorporating services in buildings was always with architects you can see this in windows and overhangs and chimneys service stairs around buildings these are always inherent in the architecture but when it comes to modern building services very little has been written and yet it’s so fundamental to architecture unless there is some very obvious visible feature it is not usually discussed in this context the exception to this is architectural historian Rana bannon’s book the architecture of the world tempered environment which is really the only architectural academic text dedicated to modern building services in architecture he said in a world more humanely arranged this book need never have been written because those services in buildings that provide the comfort and well-being of humans would always have been part of the history of architecture the birth of modern building services starts with air-conditioning and a block of ice to keep auditoria comfortable in the late 19th century a block of ice was melted next to a fan one ton of ice gave enough cooling to last the one performance this is still the common metric of cooling in the u.s. they started the development of air conditioning and the idea that cooling could be transferred mechanically around a building but these services were still in the early years seen as a supplement to the fundamental control of climate otherwise provided by the mass of the building and by regulating the opening sizes this is the Milan building completed in 1929 in Houston it’s considered the first air-conditioned building by Willis carrier but even with air conditioning there is still full access to light and opening windows these buildings grew in scale and number and with technology and familiarity they allowed the freedom for design to focus on maximizing the floor area and minimizing construction cost and later allowed more transparency very much advocated by modernist architecture advances in structure weren’t the only reason for taller buildings in fact tall structures already existed it was the services technology the lifts the artificial lighting and the air conditioning that made building tall habitable space as possible as the facade became less of an environmental regulator buildings became wholly reliant on building services to even be occupied today building services make up around 30% of the construction costs and 10% of the floor area however this area in cost was always previously built in as part of the architecture and not singled out it’s been taken to its ultimate in terms of expressing architecture this is Lloyd’s of London completed in the 1980s these buildings are highly reliant on complex control systems but can be separated from the surroundings that they’re in and the occupiers they serve and we as building services engineers are highly skilled in delivering these sorts of buildings this is inside Lloyds of London this building had one of the first fluid dynamic models built which demonstrated that for smoke and normal ventilation there was no need for additional fans or separation of space you can also note from this image the level of detail in the integration between engineers and architects this model for architecture has become normal and it is now embedded in our training education as well as the standards that go with modern buildings any shortfalls in buildings as climate regulators are then corrected by the building services this building in the city has a very large atrium and lift shaft on the entrance which faces southwest we demonstrated through very detailed analysis that this would be much better as a naturally ventilated space it has a 50 meter tall chimney above the entrance so no cooling equipment was required and it would have been cheaper to run however in the negotiations with the tenants engineer we ended up having to air-condition it the default standards for officers left us no room for sensible discussions I’m not discounting the glass box it keeps improving and has evolved at the Siemens crystal building the facades are sleek elevations but our combination of solid and glazed curtain walling panels which are angled to reflect the Sun and tuned to orientation the building has low-energy air-conditioning systems as a result and can also be naturally ventilated this is very much the designers working with tried and tested products and materials but in a different way so to close this section on architecture a summary of where we are high-tech buildings evolving over time and adapting their facades and M&E; systems for greater efficiency the Gherkin has an inner facade layer and buffer atria spaces the crystal has a very simple facade which is tuned to its orientation and the latest one The Shard has a fully glazed double facade with automated shading but how far does this way of building take us to answer this I go to my next topic bat of building science the physics and behavior of the building envelope the structure the form and heights of spaces and the materials that make up buildings our basic modern assumption is that services are separate to the other building components if there is enough space it is the most simple solution to completely separate out layers to make more efficient use of space services and structure can start to be physically integrated the Lloyds images earlier Illustrated this however the question of building science is how can structure architecture and services share function to save material and improve performance this goes back to earlier examples where buildings provided environmental control one thing it does which is almost the opposite of how modern construction works is to blur the edges between disciplines and force much closer working and less packaging which is another challenge for designers and builders when it is easier to deal with minimized and simple interfaces examples of buildings that rely on science or building physics tend to be smaller bespoke buildings in this example the necessity for using local materials and achieving natural ventilation and light as the only form of temperature control meant using the height and orientation of the building and its form to create the right environment the entire facade opens up and is entirely shaded to make this classroom work and of course there are plenty of other small-scale examples of building physics at work on a much larger scale and particularly in our cities there are only a few examples portcullis house is one which although considered bespoke and one-off it is an exemplar of integration of building physics and building services systems with architecture designed in 1994 you can read the systems and the structure in the facade which allowed clear open space inside and takes the services directly to the space as they serve the facade is tuned to the system with clerestory glazing to get light deep into rooms but a shaded triple glazed unit which is also the return air path to keep the windows cool the chimneys and the air handling units are the roof using the roof form they catch wind at lower level and then expel it through wind driven chimneys above a second more recent example shows that similar levels of integrated thinking can be achieved for more speculative officers the concrete structure is exposed for thermal mass and works with an underfloor air system conditioned air is circulated through central structural columns again for the most efficient way of distributing air to the floors this is a project that I worked on and I learned that the test of whether a design team has worked closely enough together is when everybody thinks it is their design and this is what integration looks like it is also about build services working with architectural form at the London Aquatic Center the building services work with the physics of the space air conditioning is only where there are people at low level so the rest of the space isn’t conditioned the facades allow the whole space to be naturally lit and give passive solar gains to reduce energy consumption the level of integrating performance of a system is at its best even though actual services cannot be read other buildings on the Olympic 2012 park have similar levels of performance integration this is something that isn’t so common outside of the UK and it shows the UK leading in holistic design thinking with the lure of BIM homogenizing design for construction again we need to hold on to this level of design thinking and integration of architecture and engineering the third of my four topics is mechanical and electrical engineering I’m going to talk about it in the context of building performance and the systems that use energy firstly why do buildings consistently under perform on their prediction at the design stage there is always a detailed estimate of energy consumption for a typical year for buildings operation and then almost without exception when actual metered data is taken it can be double that original prediction some of this is down to assumptions about operating hours and different functions but it is also about design and systems Arab have a team that works on building performance helping facilities managers understand the designs they’ve been handed this team will carry out checks of systems in operation against the design their findings show the fundamental problem with our way of commissioning and handing over buildings where typically systems are set up too quickly and squeezed into the end of a construction program but that never really get tested and adjusted before being occupied in one example the team saved 120 thousand pounds a year for a client by reviewing and adjusting the building management system set points and finding issues that could only be found once the building had been allowed to operate for a while in carbon terms this is the equivalent to 1300 flights to New York but also a step closer to the original and prediction most importantly this approach puts the facility’s team in a stronger position to make changes and fine-tune the building because of their improved understanding so let’s assume the building is now performing and the systems are working where is the energy used it varies from building to building but this is a typical split for an office a third of the energy demand is for artificial lighting around ten percent is for cooling and refrigeration almost 30 percent is on electricity to drive fans and pumps which are part of the air conditioning another 10% is on heating energy which is usually supplied by gas in the UK and then although this number does vary greatly there is a base load of 10% for computer equipment as I have already mentioned the performance of the facade is the first step to getting it right the facade design determines the system choice and the installed capacity and vice versa the more climatic control achieved by the facade the simpler and lower the energy used this is the Macmillan Center for UCLH completed last year the facade uses a standard system which is triple glazed with integral shading blinds with a very low air tightness the air conditioning systems choice is then focused on clinical needs and not trying to deal with large load variations from the facade related to facade is lighting energy which has the most significant impact on the energy consumption of all the elements the biggest influence on this number after the depth of the floor is lighting control by using controls for daylight occupancy or even introducing task lights lighting energy can be reduced by half the other part of the energy demand pie chart is fan and pump energy the location of ventilation plant in relation to space serves is very important but equally the ability to switch off fans when they are not needed can make a significant impact providing windows that open can mean being able to shutdown ventilation fans for as much as 50% of the year finally there is the computer equipment in buildings that generates heat buildings are still designed for everyone to have a desktop computer with large processing power when in reality there is a whole mix of lower energy devices with more people using mobile devices and moving processing power to central locations so a design could allow for a base load and then extra capacity for localized areas for larger processors or multiple screens but only when needed finally unlike a window which can be seen and controlled directly modern building services are partly considered a necessary evil because they are hidden and bear no direct relevance to the users exposing services does have its downsides but if services are visible both the people who maintain them and the users can see and understand their function in this refurbishment in Tokyo the old ceilings and equipment came out and were replaced by a simple air conditioning system pipes can easily be traced to their source and new cables can be installed without having to carry out major works systems do not have to get more complicated to meet increasing demands on energy and comfort thinking about simple measures in the context of building users will have the biggest impact it brings me to my last theme of building services I’ve talked about architecture building science and building systems this last theme is people how we interact with buildings where we spend most of our time of course many things affect us and our productivity how we might feel any particular morning to the spaces themselves our access to light and the building location but comfort stands out as one of the main issues in most occupancy satisfaction surveys so I’m going to focus on comfort and control if building services as a whole doesn’t get enough air time on projects then the controls of services get almost nothing and yet it is the controls by the building meets the user the freedom that building services allows architecture of which I’ve spoken about already means that these systems aren’t only fine-tuning but also doing the bulk of environmental control so have become completely critical to having a usable occupiable building and this is very much led to centralizing control systems with some aspects like fire alarms and security the benefits of central control are obvious but I would question whether temperature ventilation should be reso remotely and automatically controlled from returning to buildings and obtaining feedback from occupants over the last 20 years there are three things that people repeatedly want more of from their buildings we want direct control of our environment we want a quick response and we want to understand how the building works we’re more likely to accept variations in temperature if we understand why and what we might be able to do about it so rather than this model of control we’re an operator has to be a single point of contact for say a thousand users which usually means days before receiving a response to a simple complaint is there a more intelligent way to use our controls knowledge and the technology to go back to a more direct control for both occupants and building managers so imagine if you could see immediately all the relevant data personalized to you your energy use the temperature in your space for example clearly we don’t need or want occupants to control everything but coming back to the three feedback points of more control click a response and better understanding there is a benefit to all of us to devolve control and provide more information to occupants of course the technology already exists in most smartphones and this idea also recognizes that most of the devices we install have intelligence and an easy means of extracting data even at a domestic level equipment now has intelligence in the form of a processor there are temperature sensors that collect data and will download the latest weather to know what to do the following day so like a series of web pages it is a series of physical devices it is the Internet of Things concept applied to buildings so rather than individual system interfaces for say lighting heating meeting rooms access all of these can communicate through one device it’s not about adding complexity but about making information more available for example an office worker may want to know the best time to open the window to save energy or just be more comfortable and they can see this for themselves on their own device this also helps operators again not with more complexity but by making the interfaces with controls much to use we are trying in our own office a system that takes building managers out onto the floors so they can interrogate problems directly and speak to users directly this all contributes to a sense of control for both parties quicker responses and more understanding as a result of thinking differently about building services I’ve tried to demonstrate that there are a number of different aspects to services and not only the mechanical and electrical engineering ones and all these aspects need to be engaged by engineers and their project teams to get a better quality solution so knowing the technical part of mechanical and electrical engineering alone is not going to achieve this there needs to be integration of architecture structure and services using building science using the knowledge from existing buildings and their performance and understanding people as for my original question is Building Services design and necessary evil that is for you to decide for now I’ll leave you with a project which I’m working on at the moment it is called the white collar Factory this is a photograph of the working prototype for it it’s an office building which is a result of looking at the future offices and posing some fundamental questions about how we design them it touches on all the aspects I’ve spoken about the working solution is a simple cooling system as part of the structure a facade that is tailored to this to provide daylight but minimize solar gains there are no ceilings giving the volume back to the space with simple exposed services but more importantly than this solution the team are thinking together learning from this mock-up and measuring its performance testing the space so that we can feed this back into the main project it is my particular example of applying integrated thinking and it has shown me that there is room for innovation on all projects and for a more holistic approach to engineering and architectural design thank you well first of all I thought is a really really interesting talk by Mike it’s really really good to understand where Mike’s coming from and his background and secondly I suppose you know it’s it’s good for us to see the broader thinking involved and in terms of the white collar factory which you know we’re we’re passionate about we have been working on for years layers in terms of the thinking the model and now at last we’re actually putting that into into reality it’s it’s for us it’s it’s good to see that actually all that thinking does make perfect sense really for and we’ve always thought that and we we believe actually that you know most enlightened intelligent providers of buildings and space should also come round to that way of thinking because I think especially today’s day and age you know in terms of looking at the triple bottom line or it is it’s not just about pounds and pennies you know if you’re investing in something that is there for the longer term you have to you have to look at them obsolescence and longevity and actually this this thinking for this new type of office building is the way forward because it is about simplifying it’s about being more intelligent with less using our materials to do no to their full extent and and giving focusing more on people rather than construction it’s actually you know the the people and the MD is in the occupier actually changing changing or giving them the tools to change their behavior and then actually everything then the flywheels from there as long as as long as you got a building that is actually set up to provide all those efficiencies actually it starts to work because you’re you’re bringing you know people’s people’s behavior what people want to do you’ll bring that together without the building candy and you have the have a much better product and a hands in it a much more sustainable future that actually costs less money burns less carbon hopefully zero government so it’s it’s it’s inspiring to see it obviously we set out in very kind of simple ways in the slides and then actually we hope that the industry moves that that way

Taylor so what you need to do the second step is brainstorm so please job is about the read related articles magazines or books this will be your second step then the third step once you read these related articles collect or jaunt opponents and organize it in a third point organized coherence is very very important in your essay or letter writing if you on of a peer deal already say let me give you just a common topic like global warming or pollution or dinner linger 10th or 12th standard relevant I say remove it just will be thinking yeah I could remove the water pollution then think about some bus horns or anything then we think about a pollution of noise pollution etc you can never do like that you need an order so the third important step is organizing your ideas so first step I don’t you pick out the topic second step read related articles and collect down the points now the collected points you will put it under different organizing in the points and cut it apart no I mean so return the coherence you need to bring now once you decide on all this you have to decide the purpose of your essay so you are cut the original a pain so later minute beside funding you know so that there are different types of writing so I am going to elaborate on all the types because your times so we will discuss three broad topics times okay what do you say where in your topic if a global one before you let our pollution anything enough on the on the topic and in ordinary or explicitly time money editor now it it’s positive Deena it is just explaining an idea or concept so on the 250 words raining huh well you should my in a global warming my internet behaviors example so I think here the poor a topic period but type of a secretary to one expository second type is analytical or compare and contrast Italian Sony got a global warming or pollution nikuman Havel Espanola analyzing the sense brakes done something to examine and built the leader understand it so third type is argument again so this is to make a claim to change the readers mind evoke a global warming is very urgent need of being in Aegina under a severe you should bring them back on the region so that is called argumentative so you decided this will be the fourth piston you decide that type of the acid based on the purpose of your writing so if a once you decide this now we are going to go to the file Peres is same so what will be there in the first panel a stack em Peres etcetera will see now can’t decide rate there are purpose of your writing you will decide the type of the writing narrator or argumentative or analytical so once now you decided in your dataset being a particle optical sled being a collector coins a prison the child is not more hiding here is along gentleman expert writer he wants to write like that he knows the contents but normal eye for beginners so beginners whatever type of articles you have read so far at the base money collected for their opinion either younger bird sending into the cornea so now let us see the five paragraphs what will be their five partners the first paragraph I call it as the thesis statement so thesis statement over a year they are the muscle Wanda Edina introduction being over school distant of a potential for introduction three paragraphs long body the last paragraph is called the conclusion but if we never advanced level uvula row so that instead of the introduction we call it as an easy statement so what does a thesis statement are departing a lot it way it has to tell the leader whether you are going to explain the concept or you are going to analyze it examine it or you are going to say whether it is good or bad so on the type of the essay back on the interaction clinical solidity yeah general — introduction of what is for you shake what is global warming this is a normal opening we will not do that since we are all like compliant children you have grown up but angry in a mummy Madrid nobody should open a thesis statement with something attractive so you need to collect some codes or some proverb or some free of famous idioms to suit the topic so we’re all putting on there topic related up or a different turn it over punch ladder or anything article that is thought are the couple on the number we will say what is pollution or what does global warming etcetera so this will be your first paragraph okay this is treatment second ebook body the second third and fourth paragraphs we call it as the body so the body of the paragraph of the essay should I tell about three key points so through Peter Pan was under points is so low good idea so three different points are highlight from the known so the first the point what should it contain a big enough it should give the strongest point of yours about the topic and you need to justify or substantiate with examples and illustrations before ever collect believe it’s info are the one who need help on it could be data I call it it’s validated Mithra period argumentative now you will give the benefits if it is analytical again so DN a— analyst for math Buster strongest point will be the first point which is the second paragraph the third paragraph you should highlight the second strongest point of yours about the topic the Smith illustrations and examples and forty to fifty words and the fourth paragraph will have your third poignant which is like weaker point Pollard more keep on and let the weakest point will be the third paragraph but also putting a substantiation with examples and illustrations so forty fifty words may not be very difficult when organizing my next one is your first paragraph which is the conclusion so the conclusion is nothing but restating the thesis statement so what you water to tell the audience are the therapy so da da da conclusion restate the thesis statement summarizing the three key points and make a very remarkable or significant or noticeable final conclusion of yours this is called the conclusion so now I would like to explain with one particular topic in all the three types yes so almost all of them would have told you about this introduction body conclusion etcetera and even I told you about the same thing in my power technical jargon it’s a PC State friend three key points and the conclusion updates on the calm people still many of you would be thinking about it so what does introduction what is the thesis statement how to write the three key points how to write the conclusion etc either information or a topic it mean a different type standing among the earth alarm this video you will literally I am going to give you H give a about the three different types of presenting one hunting one topic what various leaders about narrative or explain entry opening so know so narrative is going to end today I’m just going to take the topic GST so GST in the topic apathy panaderia I told you you become topics are we have picked a topic GST people we have read a lot of articles collected some points if we are all the respond above you know points per game if we don’t compare or does my dear friends it communicate in analyzing arguments Catarina point silca in there just explanation cool points record pocket you’re going to start your they say right so we will take GST so I will click on introduction body and conclusion so this introduction I told you we will not say Jenny Malayalam in our building and TST is the goods and services tax up in our people so this is a very normal beginning but I told you your essays should that thesis statement should really attract the reader 1 and angle 40 words color it should keep the leader the idea whether it is forcing something or explaining something or analyzing something okay so in Perseus taper married the first time I’m going to take mandated or explicitly pay for GST let I don’t know we should start with the catchy words so let us take one robber the hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax given by Albert Einstein so used to Parliament if no motion control sorry I’m Rudy and re-emission kakapo TLX Anna a very gay Paree are no the video I eat dinner yes me but I could so this is a famous code so we can start with this put again so one of the oldest attacks is the income tax but now we are going to this topic is about GST are dealing Arabic was okay from the reader a little kahramana okay in the Salah for ahead update so now we are going to stay again DSP is the amalgamating of the different central and state taxes into a single tax appeared in our big long just explained under the middle there this is a significant taken by our central government to mitigate the cascading or double taxation system it is very very transparent and it puts the Indian products as competitive as possible in the domestic as well as the international market in providing about the GST rate in production narrator pipelines are moving them is that clear so this is the introduction now we are going to the main context the second third and the fourth paragraph so a point of a partner three key points the Sylvania so everything on has what it began on Lina collect pollen Schindler three key points that Felicity for together he needed telephone aerated drink so you have to explain the salient features that will be the main point of yours okay so sunlight features a collect Penelope here are the governor three or four salient features finger to be enough forty to fifty words your first main point now the second main point you would highlight three or four benefits so that will be your second point explanation about Gina steel then the third paragraph thought may infer fourth paragraph third key point will talk about the limitations of GST I told you Leah the third key point will be the biggest argument if I’m a genius Tea Party Ramon biggest so now it’s a single taxes done so and it is very it is going to be transparent and now it is given by the economist that it will reduce the prices along so limitations workman will be the weakest point even if you are collected it from a so many articles so that will be your third key poignant two three or four you can right good let’s on stone now we come to the last paragraph curriculum shell so if wanna be the exploitation of GST — Rico so impact of GST so highlight your few goods which will come down because of GST and highlight a few goods which will in get the prices will get increased because of GST and you will conclude your narrative type of essay on the topic GST there is one more problem also you can include in the conclusion length of flights to certainties like death and tax the only one for which you can get an automatic extension this is also here famous drama given by anonymous so you can give this as such conclusion concluding statement in the narrative type of essay say no matter one or two proverbs or cut codes or radium’s sell it funny first to last of everything enough it will impress the reader so now I am going to take the same topic GST but you can present it as an argumentative essay okay so argumentative essay again the same five paragraphs introduction body with about three paragraphs and conclusion with one paragraph but either yep dinner where the Quran being particular it is based on your points only the italic funny opinion so on the some mana reader would have given you all positives about GST or our negatives about GST so we’re cutting America so our cleaner is funnier in food it is it becomes an argumentative essay so what seem introduction as it only should be catchy all right into number I told you what the thesis statement should tell the leader that it is going to be an argumentative so one code which I’ve collected is in the coating the compactor boom your file is a task for doing something wrong your taxes are fine for doing something right this is a code base by a given by an anonymous about it Thanks so if we party not something right something wrong or decomposing leader you’re okay we are going to deal something with arguments so you start your introduction with such a code expert they’re telling them it is an argument leader and also you will present the facts in such a way whether it is good or bad good eat it now we will go to the body or there are three paragraphs people either end up passing Anna first pony I told you the strongest point you will just explain the poles on the side it just can be forgettable in their salient so I mean maybe even get you collect money from Ortega so in your opinion so one or two side lengths we just coded it it then you will give your limitations even of argument furniture coin here so the what are the problems the strongest point and the GST cool cool then the third paragraph or the second main poignant will highlight the benefits so will will paragraph very critical paragraph limitations now the third key point which will be the fourth paragraph will summarize the business and the limitations and you are going to argue which is better and we just become now the conclusion in such a high profile they say you will highlight it your views whether based on these summarizing de so summarizing about a putting on a positive a favor partly Jana now on Angie no positive benefits a highlight ponytail to weaker points are collocated so I so this is a welcome change update more opinion conclusion unless you want to change the reader into negative Deena summarizing four or five negative points corseted one or two positive points go to the tail this will not bring any positive changes but has got lot of negative consequences nothing at Monica polling yet so ugly I will give you one more important proverb we must care for each other more and tax each other less at the lower probable in a modest column so you may have more less appeal so remove it as a reader gaga argumentative or Ania what if a moody so this is the argument it’ll type of essay on the topic GST but mostly I tell you don’t go for argumentative types in our example cousin asana but mostly in the united ammonius to see your back being lighter the movement either you go for the debate over explicitly estates on the next time which i am going to you analytical or compare/contrast you will go for this okay yeah so now let us do that makes the type of they stay on the topic GST so now we are here to talk about the third type of presenting and si compare and contrast type of essay on the same topic GST so I purchased a party poop the GST plus more taxes 40 million Aria articles later points palak paneer King about you can also compare and contrast and show the reader give a broader outlook of all the taxes is that clear so this is also one way of writing and I see and this is absolutely your eyes it gives about it is about the knowledge of the presenter okay so be again the same engine paragraph Wilco introduction body learn three paragraphs and conclusion but in that type of interaction a player to know bodily and I will go conclusion in a lacunae lasondra so opening statement that thesis statement should have a famous code so I am repeating the same quote also in again in your compare it contrasts on wrong so we must care for each other mode we must tax each other less I think reading in demotic putting on my clock because we are going to compare in contrast so it is tax less and think about care more so this is like a contrast okay so with this opening remarks then you will tell introduction what are the different types of taxes so like either were taught me this about GST but what does why is it given so am i connecting various central and state government taxes into one single time tax system so no Leah you know the explanation of a footer but even in a municipal you will give up there about all other taxes mentioned like Central Excise see a CST T and GSD wealth tax give tax etcetera hell are you you know a tax system this is going to be merged into a single tax appealing a solid with it but there’s opening thesis statement the reader will understand okay we are going to get input about the various tax system in one introduction now the three key point is so that will be your body so first point will be the salient features only the difference of the party gonna salient features of each tax put up in India CS 3 TN GST wealthtrack so positive people come back wondering GST is a lot more generality has two key ever attacks were wrong an insulator second key point which will be the third paragraph it will talk about the benefits or advantages of other taxes with respect to GST or the advantages of GST with respect to other taxes then the third key point which will be your fourth paragraph when we talk about the limitations of other taxes limitations of GST so this is a comparing on trust paragraph so you have to compare it mattress radius taxes with GST sorry for the reader le béret Maghrib our enemy conclusion if way in the conclusion emptier kinoma justify whether the this country requires GST or it requires the various tax systems based on the points given by you in the body so this will be like a summary of your three key points restating the thesis statement and give it the final statement whether this does GST is good or the old system is good but in hey don’t of argument finally we are just presenting various points about various senses so you know about them or closing statement it can give I’ll give you one coat people who complain about taxes can be divided into two classes men and women this is also a code given by Li anonymous about taxes so this also man women it is like compare and contrast so if the mark or totally nobody computed it will be very very appreciable so How to write an analytical essay: a tutorial for beginners. ESSAY WRITING PART 1 OF 3

hi everyone this is my attempt to explain how to write an essay if you have ever struggled with essay writing then hopefully this will clarify a few things for you not everyone is fantastic at writing essays so if it’s ever been a mystery to you as to how do you write an essay what do you include and when do you say what that’s kind of what today’s lesson is all about so you’re not going to necessarily write like a super Prize winning essay based on what I tell you but hopefully this will be a good start that will set you on the right track so that you can start making better essays in the future so what we’re going to talk about today is how to write an analytical essay so let’s say you’re looking at a poem or a story and you are asked to analyze it that is what we’re going to do is so it’s an essay that is analyzing a piece of work so in an analytical essay you analyze examine and interpret such things as a book play a poem a novel any other kind of written art the point of this type of essay is to look at one or more pieces of work and analyze what is happening that makes it so interesting you’re not trying to explain what is going on but rather why it is going on and how it is going on you’re going to analyze specific examples within the text and then come up with an educational rationale as to how those ideas arguments or examples strengthen the work or reinforce the theme the analytical essay in a secondary school setting might have five body paragraphs an introduction and a conclusion and three body paragraphs in a university setting you might write 20 to 40 pages but the organization is still the same the introduction and conclusion might be a little bit longer but the three body paragraphs will definitely expand and become three main ideas which will potentially take several several paragraphs each to write I like to think about days as merely a more formal and written dialogue between two people if you met someone on the street and you wanted to ask them for coffee you wouldn’t walk up to them and start mint conversation and say hey let’s go for coffee it would be abrupt and a little bit weird instead there’s a bit of a natural flow you would introduce to the person why you were talking to them and then you’d give them two to three ideas or think something and then you would conclude so in a normal conversation with a random person on the street it would sound something like this hey I saw you sitting there reading the book The Life of Pi that’s the introduction I read it a few times already and I saw the movie I really liked the ending that was your three points perhaps would you like to join me for coffee and we can talk about Life of Pi that’s your conclusion so these are the same a little bit less romantic but they embody a similar structure you can’t just jump into your ideas or your arguments people need to be welcomed into arguments so that’s the introductions job it’s basically an invitation to keep reading the rest of the essay so in this discussion we’re going to approach the essay in a very formulaic way it may not turn out to be the most creative or inspirational essay but it will definitely give you a framework from which to spread your linguistic wings once you get the hang of the basic pattern then you can add your own Flair and your own creative style and write something which is more original and unique what I’m going to show you is how I would write an essay there are many many ways to approach writing an essay in an analytical essay so if you learn something from another source that you really like then please incorporate it into your own writing so for now here’s here’s our basic layout in your instruction you have a few jobs to do how you do them is up to you and the order of these jobs can be negotiated but you do need to do them you need to present the author of the authors and the title of the title something on what it is you’re discussing you need to tell the audience what your three body paragraphs will talk about you need to tell your audience what your thesis statement is if you forget what a thesis statement is it’s basically what is the main point that you’re making so these are the three must-haves in your introduction and there’s some other things which you really probably should have in your introduction to dress it up a bit as an analogy when you get dressed in the morning you’re legally required to put clothes on your body that’s what the three must-haves are they’re like a legal requirement so jewelry accessories purses shoes makeup those are all the extra little bits which make up the the nicer presentation so that’s what we’re going to include now the nicer bits so the first extra nice bit would be if you start with an interesting statement about your topic a second extra little bit would be to reword this statement and I have to do is find synonyms to rephrase we adjust that if you don’t you run the risk of having an introduction that’s too choppy and very staccato the third extra little bit would be if you can provide a literary reference this then helps the reader make a connection making your job later on much easier because then the reader already has point of Russians extra bit number four is to make a statement connecting your literary reference to the theme extra bit number five would be sometimes even before your introduction and even before your title you can include a quote from a person or a piece of literature to even further contextualize what you’re talking about when you look at an introduction there are three things that you have to remember and what are they so what you’re analyzing my good author and the title thesis statement so that they know what’s the point in this essay and the topics of your three body paragraphs so that way they don’t just start reading the essay may think hang on what why am I talking about this why are we going with this again if you were to ask somebody out for coffee they want to know or where are we going for coffee what time we’re going for coffee you talk just you don’t just take them there they have to know where they’re going they want to know that otherwise it’s very serious so however the extra bits or accessories are up to you but remember similar to when you get dressed in the morning you can’t have too much stuff going on otherwise it feels chaotic and in your introduction there’s so many things that you can say that becomes difficult to know what you should say so when all is said and done if you were to write an introduction like a formula here’s what I would encourage you to write in the order that it would make sense to write it in so again you don’t have to do this but this is what if you don’t know what you’re doing this is a really good place to start okay so number one is start with an interesting statement about your topic number two reword this statement thinkings act idea change the words around a little bit and give it to the reader again so you just find synonyms to rephrase we adjust said number three is you give a literary reference to help contextualize the topic and as a bit of an aside it kind of it shows the reader like I read you should trust me I read books you kind of not really showing off but you’re saying like I’m knowledgeable so it’s a good little thing to put introduction number four you’re gonna tell the reader what you’re analyzing and who wrote what you’re analyzing you can’t just say you know the poem of the Raven like you have to say this by Edgar Allan Poe I mean some people may not know — it’s fine you couldn’t tell him just in case they don’t know number five you tell the reader your thesis statement again this is a very clear direction this is where you want to go in your essay this is the main point of your essay you don’t think guessing you want to say this is what it is where you’re gonna tell them what it is okay number six you’re gonna tell the reader how you’re gonna present your thesis statement by telling the reader the three body paragraphs that you’re going to discuss number seven you’re gonna make a general statement about your topic which can connect easily to the body paragraph number one is that’s the very next thing that they’re going to read about so again it’s it’s kind of making this a nice little transition from your introduction right after there then you have your first body paragraph if your very last line in your introduction kind of introduces the first body paragraph that’s really smooth so kind of a nice little thing to put in there in your body paragraphs to approach it more form formulaic ly there are several steps you can take and remember if it takes you one sentence to accomplish step one then so be it if it takes you three sentences to accomplish step one that’s also very okay so you have to do what feels right if you think you get your point across then you get to move on to the next step if it takes you a little bit more time take your time write what you need to write and then move on so if you feel like you haven’t totally said what you need to say then just simply reword what it is that you’re trying to say until it’s understood by the reader each paragraph will have different topics depending on what you’re analyzing but for a generic foolproof layout here the three body paragraphs that would work well in the first body paragraph analyze a literary device and you’re going to tell the reader how this literary device reinforces the theme or your thesis statement and why it’s important to the overall success of the text that you’re analyzing you can use anything from symbolism to repetition took a company to illusion in the second body paragraph look at the form of the text the way that it’s writing out the physical shape of the text and tell the reader why this reinforces the theme of your thesis even just to explain that a little bit let’s say you’re reading a poem and it and it’s physically written where the first lines are really long and then towards the end it gets really short if let’s say it’s a poem about somebody’s life symbolically the form has to represent the context I mean if the form is going like this you can only assume that that the person’s life is slowly coming to an end at the end of the poem so in this way the form really does truly embody the meaning of the poem such a big deal in a lot of cases especially with poetry in the third body paragraph examine character development how do the characters grow does this reinforce the theme what is symbolic about their growth if let’s say the theme is happiness and let’s say the character grew in a happy way then that again reinforces a theme when you choose your three body paragraphs it’s similar to getting dressed in the morning you open up your closet door and you see choices and you might see a whole bunch of pants and you have to wear pants but you get to choose which pants and you get to see all these shirts and you have to wear shirt but you choose what shirt if to wear socks so you choose the socks but you need socks on that’s what body paragraphs are their options so you have so many different options to choose from so here’s just a really tiny list so just some generic options that you can choose from so number one would be literary devices and even within that there’s so many options maybe you wanted to use repetition maybe you wanted to symbolism maybe you want to chew like euphony or cacophony your illusion the second one would be character development that’s another great choice look at how the character develops does that mirror what the theme is the next would be point of view if let’s say the point of view is certain from person first-person point of view you’re going to connect more with the text because it’s written in a way that you’re supposed to connect with them it’s written from I so that again is getting out of an effect on how the reader perceives what it is that they’re reading next thing is look at how the form influences the content again like we were talking about earlier if the poem goes like this that’s going to shape your your perception of of what you’ve just read so is there anything interesting physically like if you make your eyes go blurry you just look at the text to kind of stand back is there anything physically but the way the the piece of work has been written that you think wow that’s really interesting that actually think subconsciously makes me think x y&z; that’s another thing you can talk about number five would be word choice so the words that are chosen is there reason why they’re chosen and how does that influence the way that that you understand the theme let’s say for example if you look at letters like lines on a ledger you know how like the letter act on the letter T in the letter L and J they all go above and beyond the lines of The Legend learner whereas like oh then even em s all kind of stay within the ledger let’s say what it is that you’re reading has a lot of letters that go above and beyond well maybe if the theme of the poem is like crossing boundaries or pushing boundaries well you could say even the letters themselves physically cross boundaries the letters themselves go above and beyond the lines of the ledger so even just simply word choice in terms of even just how the letters look let alone like maybe do they have a Germanic origin or an Arabic origin all of these different things when it comes to word choice really impacts how we interpret and perceive either a poem or short story the next thing number six look at direct speech what are the people thing is what they’re saying different from what is happening something interesting down line and the number seven the historical or social significance so perhaps what you’re analyzing would have been really important for the time that it was written perhaps it said something about the society in which it was written so you can examine the historical significance or the historical context of the text an example of this would be the poem in Flanders Fields we read this poem every Remembrance Day in Canada the poem would not be as inspirational meaningful without the reader having an appreciation for the context in which it was written if it was written by just somebody in a foreign country that wasn’t involved in the war in Europe you would have thought well why are we reading use that remembrance date it means something to us as Canadians because we were involved in the war so looking at the historical significance means it makes it important in terms of just understanding what the poem is about so so ultimately the the topics of the three body paragraphs are up to you so some might be more effective discuss others but there really are no three that you have to discuss however discussing literary devices one of your three is always a really good idea because it’s really upper-level thinking so can connecting like a very abstract idea to something that’s very concrete like how do you connect the idea of repetition to the idea let’s say the theme is eternity well repetition goes on forever doesn’t stop that’s eternity you just if you can find an example of repetition in a poem you’ve just proven that the theme is about eternity what a great little connection so again you decide what your three body paragraphs are about you’re basically looking at the poem when you just have to say there’s three things going on here I need to find at least I need to find at least three things like really a million going on this is interesting this is interesting this is interesting those are your body paragraphs okay within your three body paragraphs how you discuss what you discuss will inevitably change the format however if you’re stuck and you’re having a hard time coming up with what to stay here’s a formula which might work for you so here are the steps number one make a general statement about the topic of the body paragraph number two directly tell the reader what the topic of the body paragraph is number three provide an example number four explain the example number five analyze the example number six where you read number five basically just do number five again analyze it again but in different words number seven explain why the example reinforcing the theme or the thesis statement number eight explain how the text what you are reading would be different without the example number nine examine how the example changes the tone of the text what does the example do to the piece of writing to make it really effective or interesting number ten make an observation about the example number eleven remind the reader how this relates back to the theme or the thesis statement number twelve make a final statement which acknowledges the topic of the body paragraph which are working on which hints or leads to the next body paragraph this really helps transition things along so these twelve things are the basis of a body paragraph if you are writing a lengthier say that you might need to repeat this sort of patterns three or four times one of the biggest traps though that people fall into is that they have this grocery list of examples but then they don’t really examine or analyze or interpret any of them they just list them so so as an analogy imagine if you were really upset with something your girlfriend or your boyfriend had done you would really want them to understand why it bothered you you wouldn’t just say you know I know you didn’t call me and then just awkwardly stop there you you put a note you both like that bothers you like I was waiting for you to call and this bothered me because I gave up my day and I wasn’t doing anything that hung around I let my phone go on roaming waiting for you to call you have to let people know why that bothered you so that’s what you’re doing with the essay is you’re explaining it you’re analyzing you’re interpreting it you’re really going into just why it’s important you’re not just simply saying you didn’t call me and then leave it there and say NER there has to be a little bit more to it so an essay is no different you’re just simply trying to explain all the angles of whatever literary complication or point of interest is that you’re discussing finally after you’ve written your three body paragraphs you need to write a conclusion this can be quite tricky because although your concluding you don’t really want to sound as though you’re something repeating one of the tricks that I use though is that I basically take my introduction and I kind of transfer it to the bottom of my essay and I rework it and I reword it until it sounds different enough for my introduction but it still feels like I’m concluding I’m basically taking the same ideas and rewarding them because the whole point of the introduction is you’re like here’s what I’m gonna do and then you go down to the end the conclusion you’re like here’s what I did and it’s basically the same stuff you’re just writing it a little bit differently so if you want a formula though for how to approach this here’s what we’ve got so number one is you’re gonna make a general statement about the topic number two you’re gonna make the statement along the lines of although this poem may have at first seemed dark depressing and dismal after careful analysis and examination one can conclude that in fact this poem was rather incur playful and hopeful the point of this point is to remind the reader that you’ve examined the thing that you’re examining so much that you’re actually found a deeper meaning and really that you were just that smart so this is not the time to put in new information so make sure to pull out ideas that you’ve already written in your essay number three remind the reader about the three main body paragraphs which you discussed by stating three and then making an observation or statement so for example the poems use of euphony directly reinforces the message of beauty and acceptance the main character develops in a safe and comfortable way mirroring the theme of love finally the poem written in first person enables the reader to connect with a speaker on a deeper level allowing the reader to experience the love which the poet is expressing number four many people like to conclude with question this is a decently safe tactic you could ask a question such as with this poem have been as successful without central reliance upon repetition perhaps we’ll never know the point of the question is to show that you are aware of the implications of word choice and/or content don’t just ask a random questions such as we have to ask ourselves would this have been a better play or a better home or just like is Edgar Allan Poe really the poet make sure that your question is on topic safe way to make sure is turning your thesis statement into a question and then asking whether or not it achieved success for example if this is your thesis statement the road not taken’ by Robert Frost presents a man who experiences inner conflict and struggles to accept decisions in his life then you could maybe kind of rework it a little bit so that you take that exact idea and turn it into a questions so now it looks like while the narrator in this poem experiences inner conflict regarding the decisions in his life what his journey had been shadowed with a similar degree of nostalgia and inner conflict had he chosen the path not taking see basically making a statement maybe substituting a few words putting in a question mark and now there’s our our finale there’s our final question

How to Write an Effective Essay: The Introduction

hi James ringing vid I’m having a hard time reading this paper because a lot of the articles just don’t interest me and that’s a problem because this is a paper they make money because people want to read what they have to say now you are probably not writing for a newspaper or magazine but I bet you’re in school writing essays or you wouldn’t be looking at this particular video which is about well what is it it is the ultimate intro whoa whoa whoa okay the ultimate intro to what to writing essays a lot of you are studying for TOEFL IELTS or TOEIC or you just want to write and you want to write well in English well this lesson what we’re going to do is we’re going to specialize on the introduction I did another lesson one of the five point or the five-part essay if you go back and look it’s up up on Ingvild right now and it showed you know the fact that the parts of the essay and generally went over it but then I thought you know what and I actually had a student thank you from Canada Toronto walk up to me one night said you do English lesson on essay know it yeah more so okay here we are so what I want to do is I want to help you write the ultimate intro and it give you the basics so you can do something they’ll make well there are four reasons for a good intro number one if you do a good intro your whole essay will be easier to write and I’ll show you why in a second or two because the introduction is like a seed you know when you have an apple the little brown thing you take the little seed drop it in the ground a tree grows okay if you do the right introduction it’ll grow the best tree make it simple for you okay another thing is with a good introduction it helps you by giving the details but you want to give to the reader right there so they know if they want to read it or not okay it also makes it easier for the reader to understand and follow right so we’ve got number one easier for you to write number two easier for the oh sorry it makes it better for the reader to follow number three it gives you order of your argument right you can say I’m going to say this I’m going to talk about this this and this so they know what’s going on okay and number four it gives the details you know the stories about one two three four they understand so why don’t we get to instead of just talking about it you notice I have something weird on the board today Ezekiel is also confused he’s going what is this it looks like a diagram for a Star Trek the engine room right top to here of the fallopian tubes did I say fallopian tubes they don’t have perspectives that would be another lesson but what we set out is the outline and what I want you to do is if you what you want to do is before you write an essay you want to write out this outline every time I’m going to go through and give you the particular parts and then you can fill it in all right so why don’t we start off the beginning up here is what we call a grabber okay the grabber and you’re going to say what is a grabber well let’s not grab her don’t get a girl and grab her you’ll go to jail what you want to do is catch someone’s attention if you remember rightly I said I’m not really interested in what was in the paper and I wasn’t and it’s simply because they didn’t grab my intention to grab means to catch and hold they didn’t catch it and hold it now a good grabber I wrote this here but what a good grabber will do with will make you read it and look at it at first and then make you want to go deeper well how do we get a good grabber well there are five basic ways we usually talk about five finger method right now number one is this and on why did the chicken cross the road come on you want to know right okay to go to Kentucky Fried Chicken and see his relatives you like right you like it’s horrible it’s horrible but it’s a joke sometimes you can actually start off an essay with a joke a little bit of a joke it makes people go that’s funny and then I’m going to say why did you tell me this joke I grabbed you I got you now you’re curious about what else I have to say even if it’s not the best joke okay now sometimes we want to be a little bit more serious because we are obviously still studying at higher Institutes of learning all right and if you’re doing that then you might want to go a little bit higher you might want to put down the old Provo Meo proverb you know a bird in the hand oops right that’s proffered I preferred something else when I didn’t write it all right proverb all right and you know a proverb is basically something that’s been written a long time ago everybody kind of knows it we don’t know who said it a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush George Bush I’m not talking about you okay you know that everybody knows these things I mean that one is in several languages people literally have told me we’ve that’s it we have it in my language who made it we don’t know but then sometimes you wanna get a little bit more you know poignant or you want to get a little bit more serious so you want to use a quote one of my favorite quotes is by a guy named Winston Churchill a Prime Minister of England and one day I wear my England shirt with my name on it look out for that lesson okay anyway he said I am always ready to learn however I am NOT always prepared to be taught and that’s where I kind of get my philosophy for teaching as well right like people always want to learn they never say I don’t want to learn English they just might not like your style of teaching so you have to adapt right so you might have a quote which I just gave you the next is this because that sometimes a little bit what we call frou-frou well snobby you might want to bring it a little bit more down-to-earth and you want to make might want to use your own anecdote a little story from your life you know so you’re talking about the essay you go you know in my life you know maybe I came from a small town up in New Haven making this up it’s a story right and everybody was poor but the one thing we had was soul we cared right and then you might turn around and say in your essay you know it’s this caring that makes you manatee work it doesn’t matter what we have oh my god that’s so deep okay so that an anecdote can do that now there’s a couple other things because if you’re doing well maybe as I said you might not be in school maybe you’re doing business and there are a couple other things that would work well for you well one is a surprising fact oh I should have shouldn’t have told you yet did you know one in two people are female yeah of course you did that’s not a surprising fact but you get the drift when I say you get the drift you get the general idea which basically means you tell people something that they may not have known completely surprises them like a diet cola will rot your brain and give you brain cancer I’m sure you’re like all right now all right you’re like oh my god no one told me this yeah it’s possible okay so surprising fact and if that doesn’t work this one always works I guarantee it you know how I can guarantee it okay how about this how would you like to make a million dollars in the next ten minutes all right okay now English server is crashing because you’re older how I make the money how I make the money and this is when we use we use your curiosity I’m gonna ask you a question you start with a question people I need to know I want to know the answer this question these are your grabbers so sorry it took so long to get into it but this is an important thing because if you don’t have my attention you’ve got nothing so I might waste three minutes of your time now explaining it but understand without these things at the beginning of your paper nobody wants to read it and worse your teacher who has to read it doesn’t want to read it you don’t want them to start off negatively you want them totally interested and captivated captivate me like capture hold on to their health okay now that’s your grabber and now you have the five grabbers that we can possibly use okay so that’s five of them so what’s the next part now you’ve got a grabber I might say to you what the hell are you talking about what do you want to tell me you got my attention I’m curious what are you talking about this is where we come up with topic your topic is your subject okay so here hey this is the attention we want your attention attention Kmart shoppers okay but now we want to know the subject what are you to talk about money sex drugs rock and roll Ezequiel don’t think yes there are things about Ezekiel you don’t know okay now topic is good but let’s just say something like I came up to you and said I am the richest man in Canada Galen Weston okay I am the richest man in Canada you’re going to say James prove it how do I know you were the richest man in Canada hmm well for this I’m gonna have to give you reasons if I don’t have reasons for saying what I’m going to say why would you believe me you’re going to say I don’t think so so I need to give you reasons now to keep it simple I’m going to say let’s talk about three reasons you could have 10 reasons you could have two you want to have more than one okay when I talked about the five paragraph essay I talked about introduction the body and I said three main reasons and then I said conclusion so we’re going to stick with that formula okay so let’s say we have three reasons they can be any reasons you want but they should be related back to the topic I say this because of that okay right another thing we can say that would be main ideas all right they’re going to end up being your main ideas when I’m there will be a second part to this which will be based on the body and we’re gonna take these reasons and make them the main ideas in the body okay cool all right let’s keep going so you know there’s got to be another part to this yeah all right so we have our reasons here and we list them one two three right number one number two number three okay now here’s the cool thing now notice I put one two and three reasons these are the first things that come to my mind but really when I put the word order over here you can make up the order what is stronger because when we have an essay what we want to do is start from the weakest idea and go to the strongest building right you start with a dollar you had to you had three you get more and more you don’t start with ten and go to one that’s weak right we want more so here when we put order you might put one two three here but you might say okay actually this should go first this should go second and this should go third so you can organize remember I talked about the order you can organize your thoughts before you write the paper because it’s harder to get rid of words right then when we start with a skeleton because remember this will be like one to three words I’m going to demonstrate quite quickly at the end how we would do a very quick intro all right now finally now you’ve got your grabber in your topic and you’ve got your reasons for it you’ve told me what you to talk about you got my attention but you haven’t told me what you’re arguing why are you talking about this why is this important to me this comes down to low and most important and yet fundamental parts of writing in English the thesis there we go the thesis comes look lost but sometimes it’s first the reason why or what I want you to believe what I want you to understand what I want you to change your mind to okay now if you’re doing saying you’re selling something is the reason why you should buy my product okay my product is a car this is what’s good about it but ultimately this is why it’s the best and why it’s the best now thesis to write a thesis can be most difficult can be or we can make it simple and one of the easiest ways to do it is well if you’ve got a topic do you like it or don’t you like it positive or negative do I support it am i against it once you figure that out it’s not that hard to write a thesis because the next stage we’re going to go to is w5w v is who what where when why and okay that’s what that tiny thing that you’re not supposed to see because it’s not really a W but you know how are you is a question right it’s an information question we need to draw information what we’re going to do here is we start with a topic and we started doing the W fives like why is it important who is affected by it when was it invented where would you find it this kind of thing we start with a question it gives us a question about the subject itself now what we can do from that once we’ve decided we want to be positive or negative and we have aw5 we flip this get rid of it literally when we do questions in English we have how are you and then we can flip it around and say okay good idea what were you what do you like we get rid of it we flip it around go I like this right so we flip a question into a statement first by taking the verb in the subject and flipping them and you can say boom boom boom good example well I like fighting right who is affected by fighting right we might say who is affected by fighting you’re strong statement everyone because the answer will predict your strong statement so when we go from the question we get an answer and we make that the strong statement so who is affected by fighting everyone strong statement everyone is affected by fighting therefore because I hate it it must be ended Wow easy steps hook a topic boom boom boom we get a thesis right now of course it’s going to take a little longer but I’m going to take a second or two to go through an example one for you right now because when I give you this introduction it should take you five ten minutes to come up with one of course you’re gonna have to fill it out with sentences but you should get the basic essence down very quickly but of course you’re good students and you’ve studied it right so let’s take a look okay you know this one is a grabber you know this is topic and you know this is your argument right okay so what you want to argue I should say your argument what you want to argue so let’s do a grabber all is fair in love and war subject fighting hmm fighting now we’ve got our grabber you got my attention all of us ferric Lee what are you talking about love or what now I’m telling you the subjects about fighting they’re going to say well what what about fighting power hurt okay when you fight you get powerful fighting when you fight people get hurt okay people get hurt when you fight and let’s say solution okay you’re okay James so far you’ve written this but it’s not helping me I go I’m not finished this is my argument because now we’re going to do the thesis remember we can go positive or negative so of course most of you thinking fighting is bad right and it’s about power hurting people and solutions I’m telling you fighting is good I decided I’m going to go positive what you’re crazy I am you haven’t figured this out haha too late fighting is I’m going to say fighting well before I even get there cuz I can say fighting is good w 5 w 5 w 5 w 5 I’m going to now find some reason to come in here and make it positive how can fighting help us how when does fighting do the most damage or when does fighting do the best in the relationship who is the best fighter see these are W 5 so I said I want to be positive so now I’m gonna do this w 5 thing I’m gonna go okay okay okay okay okay okay fight fighting is the only way to heal the world what now he’s gone crazy that worm is in his brain no hear me out I’m going to show you how this essay works I know it’s crazy it’s a mess but you’re gonna hear me out okay I’m going I’ve done my W 5 I think positive I went how I use the how I said strong statement how strong look the only the best thing to do in a thesis is use superlative strong language no maybe know if or might be strong hard okay so I said the only way of course you either agree or disagree and this is what’s necessary with a thesis and if you look I’ve outlined everything but now I quickly will go over it so you can see my ideas for my essay all is fair in love and war to add to opposites we would say right and then I said fighting and look at the subject I put power hurt a solution well fighting is about power we could say fighting is about personal power and we get power from ourselves to know who we are when we fight for what we believe in ha didn’t see that did you okay boom I got my I got it okay so I got my grabber and I’m gonna come down to this part later gotta slow down gonna calm down and exciting I went to that fight see I want to fight okay so that’s the first thing personal power we only discover who we are by fighting for what we believe hurt yes people do get hurt but it’s only when you do get hurt from fighting do you understand what you are losing and what is necessary to you hurts we just use fighting for hurt and we use pain to show it’s good because that makes you want to step up because when you do get hurt it makes you want to do more to protect yourself and the things you love and solution only when you have fought for something and got a solution will you protect that solution oh yeah not so crazy because I’m sure you like interesting that’s the power of a good argument when one knows how to argue correctly one can take something that seems crazy and make it completely logical fighting is the only way to heal the world through each person gaining their own personal power learning that what hurts them is what they need to protect and fighting solutions that we fought for it and fighting to keep these solutions can we heal the problems of the world you can’t walk away from your responsibilities didn’t see that did you all from this now of course we’d make sentences the final part of this whole thing is related if you notice I carefully made sure this was related to this was related to this you cannot just write up abstract things things that they’re just ideas would have no connection we have to relate them so we want to make sure the gravel is related to the thesis which is related to the topic the reasons go back here ok and the order as you notice I did it this way we could have done it anyway once you’ve done that you can do your checkmark and you are now prepared to write well we’ve done the ultimate intro you’re ready for the ultimate body I’ll give you the first step because now we’re going to take the reasons and they’re going to be the headline for the main reasons in the body see you finish this which is basically a mini essay because the conclusion is just the flip side of this a good start well as my Chinese friends would say every good journey starts with the first good step this is your first good step with a mini essay written in it as you can see the body is here which will go into the body of the essay and your conclusion is right here thank you for spending time with myself and mr. e okay he is no longer surprised he’s smiling like you have learned garage Papa and I hope you have to please come by for the second part okay when we do the body and go back to check the first lesson that we have on essays is an overview will give you an idea of where this comes from and how it fits in the total structure all right have a great day see you you know what maybe I’ll find something to read in here maybe they saw the video see I forgot my traditional ending it’s been a while now you’ve got an intro to this please cuz you don’t even know where to go I was crazy you grabbed your attention right got into a good subject got a thesis across and didn’t even show you where to go to finish it off you need to go to w-w-w as the grabber right dot eng’ as in english’ vid’ as in video’ right which is the topic or the subject plus the reasons and then calm if you don’t conclude it you’ll get there all right hey see works for everything see you later

How to Write an Effective Essay: The Introduction

hi James ringing vid I’m having a hard time reading this paper because a lot of the articles just don’t interest me and that’s a problem because this is a paper they make money because people want to read what they have to say now you are probably not writing for a newspaper or magazine but I bet you’re in school writing essays or you wouldn’t be looking at this particular video which is about well what is it it is the ultimate intro whoa whoa whoa okay the ultimate intro to what to writing essays a lot of you are studying for TOEFL IELTS or TOEIC or you just want to write and you want to write well in English well this lesson what we’re going to do is we’re going to specialize on the introduction I did another lesson one of the five point or the five-part essay if you go back and look it’s up up on Ingvild right now and it showed you know the fact that the parts of the essay and generally went over it but then I thought you know what and I actually had a student thank you from Canada Toronto walk up to me one night said you do English lesson on essay know it yeah more so okay here we are so what I want to do is I want to help you write the ultimate intro and it give you the basics so you can do something they’ll make well there are four reasons for a good intro number one if you do a good intro your whole essay will be easier to write and I’ll show you why in a second or two because the introduction is like a seed you know when you have an apple the little brown thing you take the little seed drop it in the ground a tree grows okay if you do the right introduction it’ll grow the best tree make it simple for you okay another thing is with a good introduction it helps you by giving the details but you want to give to the reader right there so they know if they want to read it or not okay it also makes it easier for the reader to understand and follow right so we’ve got number one easier for you to write number two easier for the oh sorry it makes it better for the reader to follow number three it gives you order of your argument right you can say I’m going to say this I’m going to talk about this this and this so they know what’s going on okay and number four it gives the details you know the stories about one two three four they understand so why don’t we get to instead of just talking about it you notice I have something weird on the board today Ezekiel is also confused he’s going what is this it looks like a diagram for a Star Trek the engine room right top to here of the fallopian tubes did I say fallopian tubes they don’t have perspectives that would be another lesson but what we set out is the outline and what I want you to do is if you what you want to do is before you write an essay you want to write out this outline every time I’m going to go through and give you the particular parts and then you can fill it in all right so why don’t we start off the beginning up here is what we call a grabber okay the grabber and you’re going to say what is a grabber well let’s not grab her don’t get a girl and grab her you’ll go to jail what you want to do is catch someone’s attention if you remember rightly I said I’m not really interested in what was in the paper and I wasn’t and it’s simply because they didn’t grab my intention to grab means to catch and hold they didn’t catch it and hold it now a good grabber I wrote this here but what a good grabber will do with will make you read it and look at it at first and then make you want to go deeper well how do we get a good grabber well there are five basic ways we usually talk about five finger method right now number one is this and on why did the chicken cross the road come on you want to know right okay to go to Kentucky Fried Chicken and see his relatives you like right you like it’s horrible it’s horrible but it’s a joke sometimes you can actually start off an essay with a joke a little bit of a joke it makes people go that’s funny and then I’m going to say why did you tell me this joke I grabbed you I got you now you’re curious about what else I have to say even if it’s not the best joke okay now sometimes we want to be a little bit more serious because we are obviously still studying at higher Institutes of learning all right and if you’re doing that then you might want to go a little bit higher you might want to put down the old Provo Meo proverb you know a bird in the hand oops right that’s proffered I preferred something else when I didn’t write it all right proverb all right and you know a proverb is basically something that’s been written a long time ago everybody kind of knows it we don’t know who said it a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush George Bush I’m not talking about you okay you know that everybody knows these things I mean that one is in several languages people literally have told me we’ve that’s it we have it in my language who made it we don’t know but then sometimes you wanna get a little bit more you know poignant or you want to get a little bit more serious so you want to use a quote one of my favorite quotes is by a guy named Winston Churchill a Prime Minister of England and one day I wear my England shirt with my name on it look out for that lesson okay anyway he said I am always ready to learn however I am NOT always prepared to be taught and that’s where I kind of get my philosophy for teaching as well right like people always want to learn they never say I don’t want to learn English they just might not like your style of teaching so you have to adapt right so you might have a quote which I just gave you the next is this because that sometimes a little bit what we call frou-frou well snobby you might want to bring it a little bit more down-to-earth and you want to make might want to use your own anecdote a little story from your life you know so you’re talking about the essay you go you know in my life you know maybe I came from a small town up in New Haven making this up it’s a story right and everybody was poor but the one thing we had was soul we cared right and then you might turn around and say in your essay you know it’s this caring that makes you manatee work it doesn’t matter what we have oh my god that’s so deep okay so that an anecdote can do that now there’s a couple other things because if you’re doing well maybe as I said you might not be in school maybe you’re doing business and there are a couple other things that would work well for you well one is a surprising fact oh I should have shouldn’t have told you yet did you know one in two people are female yeah of course you did that’s not a surprising fact but you get the drift when I say you get the drift you get the general idea which basically means you tell people something that they may not have known completely surprises them like a diet cola will rot your brain and give you brain cancer I’m sure you’re like all right now all right you’re like oh my god no one told me this yeah it’s possible okay so surprising fact and if that doesn’t work this one always works I guarantee it you know how I can guarantee it okay how about this how would you like to make a million dollars in the next ten minutes all right okay now English server is crashing because you’re older how I make the money how I make the money and this is when we use we use your curiosity I’m gonna ask you a question you start with a question people I need to know I want to know the answer this question these are your grabbers so sorry it took so long to get into it but this is an important thing because if you don’t have my attention you’ve got nothing so I might waste three minutes of your time now explaining it but understand without these things at the beginning of your paper nobody wants to read it and worse your teacher who has to read it doesn’t want to read it you don’t want them to start off negatively you want them totally interested and captivated captivate me like capture hold on to their health okay now that’s your grabber and now you have the five grabbers that we can possibly use okay so that’s five of them so what’s the next part now you’ve got a grabber I might say to you what the hell are you talking about what do you want to tell me you got my attention I’m curious what are you talking about this is where we come up with topic your topic is your subject okay so here hey this is the attention we want your attention attention Kmart shoppers okay but now we want to know the subject what are you to talk about money sex drugs rock and roll Ezequiel don’t think yes there are things about Ezekiel you don’t know okay now topic is good but let’s just say something like I came up to you and said I am the richest man in Canada Galen Weston okay I am the richest man in Canada you’re going to say James prove it how do I know you were the richest man in Canada hmm well for this I’m gonna have to give you reasons if I don’t have reasons for saying what I’m going to say why would you believe me you’re going to say I don’t think so so I need to give you reasons now to keep it simple I’m going to say let’s talk about three reasons you could have 10 reasons you could have two you want to have more than one okay when I talked about the five paragraph essay I talked about introduction the body and I said three main reasons and then I said conclusion so we’re going to stick with that formula okay so let’s say we have three reasons they can be any reasons you want but they should be related back to the topic I say this because of that okay right another thing we can say that would be main ideas all right they’re going to end up being your main ideas when I’m there will be a second part to this which will be based on the body and we’re gonna take these reasons and make them the main ideas in the body okay cool all right let’s keep going so you know there’s got to be another part to this yeah all right so we have our reasons here and we list them one two three right number one number two number three okay now here’s the cool thing now notice I put one two and three reasons these are the first things that come to my mind but really when I put the word order over here you can make up the order what is stronger because when we have an essay what we want to do is start from the weakest idea and go to the strongest building right you start with a dollar you had to you had three you get more and more you don’t start with ten and go to one that’s weak right we want more so here when we put order you might put one two three here but you might say okay actually this should go first this should go second and this should go third so you can organize remember I talked about the order you can organize your thoughts before you write the paper because it’s harder to get rid of words right then when we start with a skeleton because remember this will be like one to three words I’m going to demonstrate quite quickly at the end how we would do a very quick intro all right now finally now you’ve got your grabber in your topic and you’ve got your reasons for it you’ve told me what you to talk about you got my attention but you haven’t told me what you’re arguing why are you talking about this why is this important to me this comes down to low and most important and yet fundamental parts of writing in English the thesis there we go the thesis comes look lost but sometimes it’s first the reason why or what I want you to believe what I want you to understand what I want you to change your mind to okay now if you’re doing saying you’re selling something is the reason why you should buy my product okay my product is a car this is what’s good about it but ultimately this is why it’s the best and why it’s the best now thesis to write a thesis can be most difficult can be or we can make it simple and one of the easiest ways to do it is well if you’ve got a topic do you like it or don’t you like it positive or negative do I support it am i against it once you figure that out it’s not that hard to write a thesis because the next stage we’re going to go to is w5w v is who what where when why I hope you have to please come by for the second part okay when we do the body and go back to check the first lesson that we have on essays is an overview will give you an idea of where this comes from and how it fits in the total structure all right have a great day see you you know what maybe I’ll find something to read in here maybe they saw the video see I forgot my traditional ending it’s been a while now you’ve got an intro to this please cuz you don’t even know where to go I was crazy you grabbed your attention right got into a good subject got a thesis across and didn’t even show
